external hard drive problem?

bought a external hard drive 1 trillabyte Seagate FreeAgent™ Desk 1TB External Hard Drive i plugged it in and everything it came up was installing the driver then i installed the seagate manager then all of a sudden it went off the "usb disconnecting" noise came on anyone no how i could resolve this ?

i have a toshiba vista laptop btw

Look in your Device Manager, click Start then type "Device Manager" into the search box. Press enter.

See if any of your devices have any warning symbols against them.

You should try using a different USB port on your computer and also try using a different USB cable if you have a spare one.

For your future reference, it's always best to install the driver and software first before plugging in the device. Not after you have plugged in the device. The reason for this is that if you do it before plugging in the device, Vista will attempt to use one of it's built in drivers for the device instead of the one that came with the device. Plugging in after installing the software will use the correct driver.

Try removing and readding the hardware. To do this, click on the Start Menu search box and type "RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll" (without quotes).

This will bring up the Safely Remove Hardware wizard. If you device is listed there then you can select it and then click on Stop. Unplug the device when you are prompted to do so. Wait 10 seconds and then plug the device back into a different USB port.
